Living with hyperhidrosis - Jessica's story
Firstly, what is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating on many areas of the body, including hand sweat on the palms and excessive underarm sweating. It can affect anyone, at any stage in their life. Although such a common problem, it can cause huge self-confidence issues to anyone who may be suffering with hyperhidrosis.

“I’ve always been an ‘excessive sweater’. I think as a teenager you become very aware of anything that is going to be picked up by other people and that’s when I became very self-conscious of my sweating.
“When I was at school during the summer, I had to change my full top half at break time as the sweat patches I had from wearing my blazer were down to my waist, I was so embarrassed, then I would change again at lunch as I was aware of sweat patches forming.
“My mum took me to the doctors to see if there was anything that could be done, and I was given Driclor, but I didn’t personally get much benefit from using it.”
Wondering what treats hyperhidrosis, Jessica first heard about hyperhidrosis treatment at age 17 after watching an episode of embarrassing bodies, where another patient on there had undergone the procedure and achieved great results.
“When I had my first hyperhidrosis treatment at around 17, I was very nervous of needles, but I was determined to see if I would benefit from the treatment, and I was pleasantly surprised that apart from maybe one or two nippy bits, it was practically painless.
“I was like a different person that summer, I had a newfound confidence to wear anything I wanted, and I wasn’t constantly checking to see if my sweat patches were bigger than my arm could cover. To put it simply, it was life-changing!”
When Jessica was struggling to receive the treatment on the NHS any longer, she turned to us for help.
Initial consultation:
As always, we began with an initial consultation to assess Jessica and ensure she is the right candidate to undergo this treatment due to its medical nature.
Two weeks cool off period:
With all treatments here at Paragon Aesthetics we take a no pressure approach, providing as much information as possible to allow the patient to make an informed decision. For this treatment we like to give a ‘two weeks cool off period’, giving you time to decide if you’d like to go ahead with treatment, rather than carrying it out on the same day as a consultation.
Hyperhidrosis treatment:
The treatment works by blocking the nerve signals to the skin’s sweat glands, once injected results take around 10 to 14 days to fully develop and last up to four to six months. Jessica’s hyperhidrosis treatment consisted of around 20 botulinum toxin injections per armpit.
This highly effective treatment is known to reduce underarm sweating by 70-90%. Jessica went on to say: “If you’re wondering if hyperhidrosis treatment is worth it, I can honestly say it’s absolutely worth it!”
