Working out which regenerative treatment is right for you: comparing polynucleotides, PRP, radiofrequency microneedling, and Radiesse wash

Regenerative treatments have been a game-changer for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin, restore hair growth and treat various aesthetic concerns with minimal downtime. We know it can be overwhelming to decide which one is most suitable for your needs. Whether you’re looking to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles or promote healing, there are several regenerative options to consider.

Polynucleotides:

Polynucleotides are not fillers or anti-wrinkle treatments; they’re an injectable bio-stimulant gel that activates the production of type-1 collagen and the regeneration of skin tissues to create an immediate lifting effect.

How it works:

Polynucleotide treatment uses DNA fragments extracted from salmon, which mirrors human DNA. To have their desired effect, polynucleotides are injected beneath the skin’s surface using a fine needle or cannula. Once injected, instead of directly adding volume to the skin, they work to stimulate the body’s collagen production and wound healing. Polynucleotides work to give an instant lift to the skin, resulting in the reduction of wrinkles, firmer skin and an overall younger appearance.

Best for:

Polynucleotides are the perfect treatment for those looking for overall skin rejuvenation, improving skin elasticity or reducing signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles, volume loss, under-eye bags, sagging skin, stretch marks and hair loss.

Maintenance and results timeline:

Results may be visible 30 to 60 days after treatment however, results will continue to improve for nine months after treatment. The recommended course is three treatments, carried out five weeks apart to achieve the greatest effect. Thereafter, repeating every six to eight months is recommended to maintain results.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy:

An amazing treatment that harnesses the body’s natural power to heal itself, using a concentrated serum of your own platelets and plasma taken from your blood to improve skin quality and the appearance of acne scarring, stretch marks and mild hair loss.

How it works:

PRP therapy uses your growth factors to accelerate healing. A small sample of your blood is taken and spun in a centrifuge to separate the growth factors from your blood cells, leaving behind the platelets and plasma. This solution is then injected into the desired treatment area, promoting rejuvenating results.

Best for:

PRP is a safe and effective treatment, suitable for all skin types, especially those looking to improve their skin quality and the appearance of acne scarring or stretch marks. PRP is ideal for patients who want to harness their bodies’ own natural growth factors and their regenerative qualities.

If you are thinking about PRP Therapy for hair loss or thinning hair, we will advise you upon consultation as the hair follicle would need to be present when going ahead with the platelet-rich plasma injection.

Maintenance and results timeline:

Results may be visible 30 to 60 days after treatment and continue to improve for nine months. To achieve optimum results, three treatments four weeks apart is recommended. When treating hair loss you will need five treatments four weeks apart. To maintain results one session every six months is recommended.

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling:

Radiofrequency microneedling combines two of the most effective skin rejuvenation treatments, radiofrequency and microneedling, to improve signs of anti-ageing, treat sun damage and scarring. Radiofrequency microneedling is often referred to as the ‘non-surgical facelift’.

How it works:

During microneedling with radiofrequency, tiny sterile needles create microscopic punctures in the skin to deliver radiofrequency energy to specific depths within the skin’s dermis. This heats the tissues and, in response, produces more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Best for:

Radiofrequency microneedling is generally suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns, ideal for those looking to improve skin texture, tone and acne scarring. Radiofrequency microneedling can be used on the face, neck, décolletage, abdomen, knees and hands.

Maintenance and results timeline:

Although improvements can be seen from one treatment, a minimum course of three treatments is required to achieve the best results. However, those with scarring or severe sun damage/skin ageing are recommended to undergo a course of six treatments. Treatments are carried out at four to six-week intervals. Results will continue to improve long after the course of treatments as the cells will function more optimally and collagen will continue to be produced over this time. A single maintenance treatment is then required at six to 12-month intervals, depending on the patient.

Radiesse wash:

Radiesse is a market-leading injectable product with over 20 years of scientific and clinical experience and over 220 peer-reviewed publications showing its safety and effectiveness, making it one of the world’s longest-standing and clinically researched cosmetic injectables.
Radiesse wash is an advanced skin treatment designed to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the skin by restoring lost volume and enhancing facial contours.

How it works:

The treatment involves hyper-diluting Radiesse with saline, making it a thinner product that can be injected under the skin. It is injected into targeted areas to provide an immediate lift while stimulating natural collagen production over time. It can be used to treat areas where skin appears thin or dehydrated but particularly excels in treating the mid and lower face, neck, chest and hands.

Best for:

Radiesse Wash is particularly effective for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing skin texture and improving overall skin quality, leading to a more youthful and vibrant appearance. This treatment is best suited to treat the mid and lower face, neck and decolletage and is particularly suited to patients who want immediate results that improve over three months from a single stand alone treatment.

Maintenance and results timeline:

Radiesse Wash is a single treatment, with results typically visible immediately after treatment. However, it’s important to wait at least three months to allow the collagen to be produced and take effect before reviewing results. The longevity of results varies among individuals but generally lasts between 12 to 18 months. A single maintenance treatment is then required every nine to 12 months to maintain results.

In short:

No matter which regenerative treatment you choose, it’s exciting to know that each one works by activating your body’s natural healing abilities, leading to results that are not only effective but long-lasting. As these treatments stimulate regeneration from within, improvements develop gradually as your skin or hair renews over time, revealing transformative changes that are worth the wait.

To maximise the benefits, it’s also essential to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner and maintain regular treatments as recommended.
