Five things to consider before getting dermal fillers
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are a non-surgical treatment designed to enhance and rejuvenate the skin. They are used to restore lost volume, enhance certain features or achieve a more youthful appearance. At Paragon Aesthetics, we use a range of different fillers from the Teoxane range. Our practitioners have trained extensively under the Teoxane brand. This enables them to create natural results, making full use of the range.
Like any cosmetic procedure, it’s important to go into the treatment fully informed. That’s why we’re giving you five things to consider before getting dermal fillers.
1. Research your practitioner
Before booking your treatment, take the time to thoroughly research your practitioner. Your practitioner should be a qualified medical professional, a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber and should be fully insured to carry out aesthetic procedures.
Check their credentials. Look into any additional training they may have undertaken in aesthetics and most importantly, review their portfolio of work. A reputable practitioner will usually showcase before-and-after photos on their website or social media, giving you insight into their technique and aesthetic style.
It’s important to choose someone whose results align with your personal preferences. This step will give you peace of mind and ensure you’re in safe, experienced hands.
2. Don’t skip the consultation
A thorough consultation is essential before any treatment. This is your opportunity to discuss your goals, voice any concerns and talk openly about what you’re hoping to achieve.
Your practitioner will assess your facial structure, discuss possible treatment options, and determine if dermal fillers are the right approach for your needs. It’s also the time to go over your medical history, including any medications you’re taking, to ensure it’s safe for you to proceed.
3. Review your consent form
Before going ahead with any injectable procedure, you should be fully informed about what it involves. Your consent form will outline the potential risks, side effects and benefits of the treatment, as well as any alternative options available to you.
Take the time to read these documents properly and don’t be afraid to ask questions if anything is unclear. Being informed ensures you’re making the right decision for your body.
4. Factor in downtime
Although dermal fillers are minimally invasive, they’re still a medical treatment and can come with short-term side effects. Swelling, redness, bruising and mild discomfort at the injection sites are common and usually resolve within seven to ten days.
With this in mind, it’s wise to avoid scheduling your appointment too close to important events such as weddings or holidays. This gives you enough time to heal and a chance to get used to your new look.
5. Consider lifestyle changes
To get the best results and minimise the risk of complications, there are a few simple lifestyle changes to make before and after treatment:
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after treatment, as it can increase the risk of bruising.
- Stay makeup-free for 8 hours post-treatment to reduce the chance of infection.
- Skip intense exercise, saunas and sun exposure for 24–48 hours after your appointment, as heat and sweat can increase swelling or disrupt the filler placement.
- Hydrate and avoid blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin (unless medically necessary), as these can also heighten bruising risk. Always speak to your doctor before stopping any medication.
Following your aftercare advice is just as important as the treatment itself, it supports safe healing and enhances your final results.
