Rosacea awareness month: understanding the condition and exploring treatment options
April is officially rosacea awareness month, a time to shed light on this common yet misunderstood long-term skin condition. Affecting millions of people worldwide, rosacea can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem. Despite its prevalence, many people are still unsure of what rosacea is, what causes it and how it can be treated.
At Paragon, our treatments can support the long-term management of rosacea by promoting healthy skin and strengthening the skin’s barrier function. However, they are not designed to treat moderate or severe flare-ups, particularly pustular rosacea, which may be better managed medically by a GP or dermatologist, often with oral or topical antibiotics.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition, usually affecting the central areas of the face, particularly the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. The main symptoms include redness, flushing and in some cases small, pus-filled bumps, which can commonly be misunderstood as acne.
Whilst the exact cause remains unclear, several factors can contribute to its development such as genetics, immune system disorders and environmental causes. Certain triggers such as hot drinks, spicy foods, stress and extreme temperatures can also play a role in flaring up rosacea symptoms. Although rosacea cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed and controlled through various treatments.
Treatment options for rosacea:
LED light therapy
One treatment option which is gaining popularity is LED light therapy, more specifically red light therapy. This form of treatment uses light energy to penetrate the skin at deep levels to stimulate energy production in turn, helping to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
For individuals with rosacea LED light therapy can be a great non-invasive treatment option that helps to reduce symptoms after one session. At Paragon Aesthetics we are proud to offer the award-winning Dermalux Flex MD LED phototherapy device, clinically proven to transform a wide range of skin concerns with its powerful light wavelength technology. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy
PRP therapy uses a patient’s blood, which is processed to split red blood cells from platelets and blood plasma. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected back into the skin to promote healing, reduce inflammation and stimulate tissue regeneration. PRP therapy can have anti-inflammatory effects, helping to reduce rosacea symptoms and improve overall skin health. The angiogenic (the process of new blood vessel formation) effect of PRP therapy, also plays a key role in promoting healing and reducing inflammation. We offer PRP therapy with Dr Chloe Aucott here at our Newcastle clinic. Book directly here.
Polynucleotides
This procedure uses injectable bio-stimulant gel that activates the production of type-1 collagen and the regeneration of skin tissues. Polynucleotides are a great treatment option for rosacea due to their anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm the skin during mild to moderate flares. Enhancing skin hydration, polynucleotides can improve overall skin texture and structure, making it less reactive. Additionally, they promote healing aiding tissue repair which is beneficial if the skin is damaged or inflamed. Book here.
Medical grade skincare
In addition to in-clinic treatments, medical-grade skincare can play a key role in managing rosacea symptoms and supporting long-term skin health. Here at Paragon Aesthetics, we proudly partner with GetHarley, giving our patients access to medical-grade skincare, backed by clinical research ensuring safe and effective use for rosacea-prone skin.
Key ingredients often recommended for rosacea-prone skin include niacinamide, green tea extract and azelaic acid, which help reduce redness and soothe irritation. Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides work to reinforce the skin barrier, reducing sensitivity and the risk of flare-ups. These formulations are also free from common irritants like fragrances, alcohol, and harsh exfoliants, ingredients that can often worsen rosacea symptoms. Book a consultation.
