Taking aftercare seriously
Whether you’ve received dermal filler or toxin treatment, it’s always important that you follow the aftercare instructions.
Not only can following the aftercare instructions ensure your treatment area heals without any unexpected problems, but it can also minimise bruising and swelling.
Depending on the type of dermal filler it can take up to two to three weeks to see the final result, for toxin it can take up to two weeks.
So, what should you do to minimise the swelling and bruising from dermal filler? A clean cold compress held on the treatment area is recommended, but you must avoid applying heat to the area.
Unless contraindicated by your personal medical history you can also take antihistamines to help reduce the swelling.
But what about preventing infections from dermal filler? You should avoid touching or applying makeup to the treatment area for eight hours following treatment, not drink alcohol for 24 hours and avoid physical exercise for at least 48 hours.
Extreme temperatures should be avoided for 24 hours, and you should try to stay out of the sun and avoid UV exposure for at least four days after your treatment, as this can result in in dark pigmentation of the injection sites.
It’s really important that you don’t roll or massage the treatment area, it’s completely normal for dermal fillers to feel ‘lumpy’ within the first few weeks after treatment.
Aftercare to minimise infection is slightly different for toxins, makeup over the treatment site should only be avoided for three hours.
On the day of toxin treatment, exercise, extreme temperatures and excessive sun exposure should only be avoided for the rest of the day following your appointment.
You should avoid rubbing the treatment area, including having a facial for the next 24 hours after toxin treatment, and when removing your makeup, rubbing in motions away from your eyes will reduce irritation of the treatment site.
Any small bumps or marks will go away within a few hours following your toxin treatment. As with every treatment, there’s a small risk of bruising, however it will only be temporary and can easily be covered with makeup after three hours.
If you experience a mild headache after receiving anti-wrinkle treatment, this is nothing to worry about – it happens to a lot of patients!
If this occurs, paracetamol can be taken, but do not exceed the maximum dose. You shouldn’t take aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, as this can actually increase the risk of bruising.
Finally, our most important aftercare advice is that if you experience any adverse reactions or have any questions regarding the aftercare given, you should contact our practitioners – they’ll always be on hand to help.
